Matthew Beckett brings a unique combination of experience to his practice of entertainment law. He grew up across the river from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where his father, producer Barry Beckett, was one of the “Swampers”; a group of musicians immortalized by Lynyrd Skynyrd in “Sweet Home Alabama.” After graduating from Belmont College with a music business degree, Matthew joined his father in starting Beckett Music Group, which Matthew led to eight ASCAP and BMI awards in ten years.
Following the sale of the publishing company to what is now Universal Music Group, Matthew spent time in the studio as a recording engineer. His work can be heard on Grammy nominated albums by Aaron Neville, The Oak Ridge Boys, and the Gaither Vocal Band.
Matthew then decided to combine a law degree with his practical knowledge of the music business. Following law school, Matthew practiced at a Nashville entertainment law firm, where his responsibilities included copyright and trademark registration, licensing for music and television, business formations, and most of the firm’s artist, producer and songwriter agreements. He also practiced copyright litigation.
In November 2009, Matthew started Beckett Law Office while handling business and legal affairs for MPR Entertainment Group, LLC. His clients include music publishers, songwriters, artists, record company executives, producers, and business owners.
Matthew is a member of the CMA, ACM, NBA, and TBA.
